Bisulfite reaction with oxygen
The bisulfite anion exists in solution as a mixture of two tautomers. One tautomer has the proton attached to one of the three oxygen centers. In the second tautomer the proton resides on sulfur. The S-protonated tautomer has C3v symmetry. The O-protonated tautomer has only Cs symmetry. See more The bisulfite ion (IUPAC-recommended nomenclature: hydrogensulfite) is the ion HSO 3. Salts containing the HSO 3 ion are also known as "sulfite lyes". Sodium bisulfite is used interchangeably with sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5). … See more Tautomerization There exist two tautomers of bisulfite. They interconvert readily but can be characterized individually by various spectroscopic … See more WebJul 8, 2009 · But sodium bisulfite will also react with dissolved oxygen in the water and any excess bisulfite will tend to reduce the oxygen concentration, increasing the potential for increased anaerobic biological growth. These are the species responsible for heavy slime formations that can rapidly foul the systems. A definitive symptom of this is the ...
